ForeverMissed

Edythe Madeline Eskridge (nee Kumes) age 84, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 10, 2023, surrounded by her family and extended family at Shady Lane in Clarksboro, NJ. Born in Camden, NJ and raised in Fairview (Morgan Village), she was the loving daughter of the late John and Edythe Kumes. Her kindness, love and core values were built on the strongest of foundations; based on love, laughter and compassion with her parents and siblings. She would often reminisce that the simplest of times were the best of times.

Edie was a homemaker for most of her younger years and later in life working on the production line at Campbell Soup in Camden, NJ, and many years in customer service for Meat Stop/Rastelli Fine Foods in Deptford & Swedesboro, NJ.

She loved spending time with family, friends and especially her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Edie had a passion for cooking and baking, an original “foodie” before the phrase was coined; and what an amazing cook she truly was. She liked playing cards, word searches and bingo. She had a love for Disney movies, and she conquered Game Boy back in the 90’s along with many other handheld games, because she truly was a kid at heart. Her favorite past-time was crocheting, spending countless hours on each masterpiece. Forever the optimist you could often find her in line for the next winning lottery ticket. She may have never won that jackpot but being the die-hard Eagles fan that she was….she got the Big Win when they won the Super Bowl on her 80th birthday. GO BIRDS!

Edythe was a devoted mother and is survived by her grateful daughters and loving family, Violet Faulkner (Carl) of Clarksboro NJ, Janet de Mers (Scott) of West Deptford NJ, Jacquelyn Amerman (Ed) of Deptford NJ; her beloved grandchildren, Michele (Steve), Preston, Jordan (Alex), Elizabeth, Zoe, Jenna, Devin; her seven cherished great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Pauline Kumes of West Warwick RI and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence (Butch) Eskridge; her infant daughter Kathryn Irene Grater; sisters V. Janet Franchi and Kathryn (Taffy) Barkowsky; brothers John (Jack) Kumes and Thomas (Tuck) Kumes; brother-in-law William Franchi and sister-in-law Rosemary Kumes.

Visitation Thursday, January 26 from 9:30 to 11:30AM followed by funeral service at FERTIG FUNERAL HOME, 63 N. Main St., Mullica Hill, NJ 08062. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org

I never met Edie, but, do know her niece Jodi, daughters Violet, Janet and Jackie, with whom I have a special friendship. Over the years Jackie shared stories of her mom, childhood and the love and laughter they all shared. It’s a special woman that raises her family surrounded by such happiness. To her family and close friends I know the sadness you feel now is palpable. Stay strong. My condolences with heartfelt love. Lenora Cuccinello

My first memories of "Mrs. Grater" were sitting at her kitchen table in Barnsboro, eating melba toast, and most likely plotting behind her back to get Violet out of the house. I'm assuming something we would later regret, since she always seemed to know, under that watchful eye, we were probably up to yet another foolish idea. However, as an adult, what I remember most is her intelligence and quick wit with a no-nonsense delivery which usually ended in laughter for us all. I will miss the joy I felt while in her presence, this special, unique lady that lives on in her daughters. Thank you Mrs Grater for the memories

Mom,
We loved to say “MY” Mommy all the time; it rolled right off our tongue. You made each of us feel like we were the only one.

Here is a poem for you:

My Mom Kept A Garden
Author Unknown

My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,

She planted all the good things
that gave my life it’s start.

She turned me to the sunshine
 and encouraged me to dream,

Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem…

And when the winds and rain came,
 she protected me enough-

But not too much because she knew
I’d need to stand up strong and tough.

Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong-

Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.

I am my Mother’s garden.

I am her legacy-
And I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me.

With much love & admiration,
your Daughters oxo
